This is a newly created Jammu region district carved out of the Doda district.
. It was declared a district in 2007. Kishtwar derived its name from Kishat Rishi who stayed here.
• It is situated on the banks of the Chenab river. It is surrounded by Kargil district in the North and North-East, Himachal Pradesh in the South, Doda in the South and South-West and Anantnag in the West and North-West.
•Of the total population, Muslims are 57.75%, Hindus are 40.72%, Buddhists are 0.91%, Sikhs are 0.20% and Christians are 0.12%.
• Main languages are Kashmiri (50.60%), Kishtwari (16.67%), Bhadrawahi (4.03%), Gojri (14.36%), Pahari (7.44%), Siraji (1.25%) and Dogri (0.53%).
As per the census 2011, it is the third least populous district of Jammu and Kashmir after Leh and Kargil districts. It is known as the Land of Saffron and Sapphire. Blue Diamond sapphire is found in the mine of Padder valley.
It is also famous for its Kishtwari crafts like handmade woollen blankets, shawls, gabba, etc.
• Some famous tourist places are Chowgan, Machail Mata, Kishtwar National Park, Sinthan Top, etc.
Besides, the district is also famous for its Bina work of wheat and paddy grass, which is a rare kind of art and craft.
• Its Trans-Himalayan treks, which lead to Kashmir, Suru, Zanskar, Panikhar, etc., lie here and are also very famous.
